CruisePak And The Home Based Agency

The Home Based Agency is the natural progression of the Home Based Agent business model. The Home Based Agency usually consists of one or two partners, working out of one of the partners home...and may or may not have other associated agents who work virtually out of their own homes.

The appearance of a Home Based Agency is really a virtual organization. To the outside world, it appears as a single element but in reality, it is a collection of two or more agents who work in their own homes respectively, but are loosely linked via technology.

Case 1: All Users Located At The Residence

This is the most common, and simplest form of a Home Based Agency organization. In this case, all the members of the agency are at the residence and they all access CruisePak simultaneously using their own computers. This is the case for the myriad of husband and wife teams out there. For this case:

  • Each person installs CruisePak on their respective computers
  • A home network is installed (wireless or hard wired connectivity)
  • One of the computers is designated to hold the common database
  • The Common Database folder on the "designated PC" is set up for sharing (Shared Documents Folder)
  • Each other computer configures their CruisePak to use the common database on the shared computer.
  • They carry on in business. The only requirement is that the computer holding the common database is always on
These types of home agency setups often do not have any outside agents and they do not have any partners that need remote access to the CruisePak data.

Case 2: Users Located At Residence And You Have Person(s) Living Elsewhere Who Require Full Access To CruisePak

Now you are getting big time. You are now at the power level of the traditional agency with remote users. And as such, you need to make a capital investment in Windows Small Business Server and a computer that meets a hardware specification necessary to run Windows Small Business Server.

To set up a Small Business Server, you install the Small Business Server product on a standalone computer according to the instructions provided with the product. After installation, the computer will appear to be just sitting there, in the corner, collecting dust. However, in reality, it is functioning as a workhorse, handling transactions, managing remote user connections via the internet, security, and more. Microsoft Small Business Server is an advanced product and not for the faint of heart. But, it will install like butter and function like a charm.

Setting up CruisePak to support Users located at the residence and remote users requiring power access to the CruisePak application entails the following:

  • Each user at the residence installs CruisePak on their own computers.
  • A copy of CruisePak is installed on the server
  • A home network is installed; preferrably hard wired for the server, wireless is OK for the rest
  • A common folder is set up on the server and the Common CruisePak database is installed in that folder
  • All users at the residence configure their CruisePak's to use the common database on the server
This takes care of the residence installation. At this point, we need to do additional things to allow access to CruisePak for the remote user. Primarily, it involves Windows Terminal Server, a subcomponent of the Windows Small Business Server. The things that need to be done are:
  • The home based agency should purchase a static Internet Protocol (IP) address from their Internet Service Provider
  • Windows Terminal Services should be enabled on the server
  • On the Home Based Agency's router, a port mapping command should be done to allow remote connections on a certain port to be passed to the server computer. This is tricky and involves having to read the server instructions carefully
  • A special web page should be developed for the Home Agency's website according to the instructions in the Terminal Server documentation (a component of the Small Business Server) such that the remote user only needs to visit that page on the Home Agency's website to gain remote access
  • The remote user DOES NOT NEED TO INSTALL A COPY OF CRUISEPAK. All they need is a web browser and they will get the full CruisePak just as it appears on all the residence computers
Once this is done, it is done. You can have as many outside agents access CruisePak in full power mode with the only limitations being the CruisePak licensing and Small business Server Licensing requirements imposed by pfsSoftware and Microsoft respectively.

If you get this done, you have a system that will support growth to 25 million a year plus; all out of your little old home based agency. And of course, you don't have the expense of the big retail agency.

Case 3: Users Located At Residence, Person(s) Living Elsewhere Require Full Access To CruisePak, And You Have Some Outside Agents Who Don't Need (Nor Do You Want Them To Have) Full Access To CruisePak

Now We Are Getting Really, Really Intense! First off, Everything as outlined in Case 2 has to be done. No once that is done, we can proceed by getting into the CruisePak Connector. The CruisePak Connector allows you to connect your CruisePak data to a website.

Website developers can use our Application Programming Interface to create your own mini web based CruisePak that can be used by your outside agents. Your custom mini CruisePak doesn't need to have full power of CruisePak Rather, only what the outside agent needs to administrate their own bookings... and thus get the booking into CruisePak without you having to type it in.

To get the CruisePak Connector Running, you'll need to do the following.

  • Install the Connector Software onto the server
  • Contact Your Web Developer and using our API, develop your specialized CruisePak for the web
  • Host your custom CruisePak in an agent only area of your website
  • Instruct your outside agents in using your application
If you get this far, you are rolling fast. You're probably flirting with 30 million plus a year in gross travel sales. And, just think, no commute, you're working in your pajamas, your holding staff meetings virtually and more. GET PSYCHED! THIS IS THE FUTURE!

Special Note: If You Don't Need Terminal Services

If you don't need Terminal Services that is OK too. You can still implement the connector, design your mini CruisePak and host it on your website without all the Terminal Services Stuff. Remember, Terminal Services is only required when you need to give one of your associates full access to the CruisePak application remotely, via the internet.
